This means long may your chimney smoke! First Footers go visiting on foot on New Years morning with a little piece of coal and usually either a bottle of alcohol or a small hip flask. If you are visited by a first footer who is ginger or blonde it is a good omen for the year!...its very social, and often many homes are visited!
