Have you ever wondered why the Poinsettia plant got its name.... Watching a Weather channel I learned that today is Poinsettia Day..a date established by The House of Representatives in 2002 to honor Paul Ecke Jr who is the founder of the Poinsettia industry (Poinsettias contribute over $250,000,000 to the U.S. economy-at the wholesale level and is the best selling plant both in Canada and the USA . The Ecke's ranch, situated in Encinitas, California is still run by Paul Ecke lll. December 12th was chosen
as it was the day GeneralJoel Roberts Poinsett passed away..he was the American botanist, physician and Minister to Mexico who in 1828 sent cuttings of the plant he'd discovered in Southern Mexico to his home in Charleston, South Carolina. Botanically, the plant is known as Euphorbia Pulcherrima. In Mexico the poinsettia is called La Flor de la Nochebuena (Flower of the Holy Night) and is displayed in celebration of the December 12th, Dia de la Virgen.
